Refusal to list a store on a German price comparison website - compliance of the interface with legal regulations
by Marcin Tomczak on Jan 25, 2026
Introduction
The lack of compliance of an online store with EU and German law may result in refusal of cooperation by key market partners, including the largest price comparison websites.
The German e-commerce market is characterized not only by high competitiveness but also by high requirements for online stores to comply with local laws and industry standards. Compliance of the user interface with both the Omnibus Directive and data protection regulations and the Digital Services Act (e.g., imprint) plays a key role here.
Case description
The client sold online in multiple markets, including Germany, and sought to increase the visibility of their offer by registering with the popular price comparison website Idealo. However, they were rejected, citing "lack of alignment with the search engine's strategic objectives," without providing specific guidelines. However, the comparison website's official documents indicated that one of the criteria for acceptance was the store's full compliance with legal requirements.
The audit of the store interface revealed a number of inconsistencies, including incorrect presentation of prices and promotions (lack of Omnibus Directive requirements), the absence of required checkboxes for marketing consents, outdated information in the Imprint section, and incorrect references to dispute resolution via the ODR platform, which has been decommissioned since July 2025.
Solution method
First, a detailed audit of the online store's interface was conducted to ensure it met the requirements of German and EU consumer law. Areas requiring immediate improvement were identified: missing checkboxes were added, the legal notice was updated, the process of presenting prices and promotions was adjusted in line with the Omnibus Directive, and references to the outdated ODR platform were removed.
After making all the corrections, the customer re-registered his store on the Idealo price comparison website.
Effects
After adapting the interface and documentation, the online store was registered with a price comparison website, gaining access to a wide range of German consumers. The implemented changes not only increased the store's compliance with legal regulations but also increased its credibility and business security.
Summary
The German e-commerce market requires strict adherence to legal standards and regular compliance checks of all sales processes. This example demonstrates that even a platform's seemingly "general" refusal to cooperate often conceals real compliance deficiencies. Regular audits and a rapid response to legislative changes are essential for successful international expansion.
